Major League Rugby held its first-ever MLR Collegiate Draft 2020 on Saturday, June 13. With more than 400 players who applied to join this weekend's draft, the competition was fierce as only 24 players were selected by 10 participating MLR teams, including San Diego Legion.
Congratulations to Patrick Madden and Cole Zarcone, who were selected as the 12th and 24th MLR Collegiate Draft picks (respectively) by Legion co-Head Coaches Scott Murray and Zack Test.
Join us in celebrating these rising stars and welcoming them to the San Diego Legion. Here's more information on the new lads joining Legion, as written by Zack...
Patrick Madden
A San Diego native, Patrick Madden is joining Legion after playing for Cal Poly Rugby. This year, Patrick was a Rudy Scholz Award finalist, which recognizes his wide range of talent while playing for California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. From age 8, Patrick had a dream of becoming a professional rugby player, which he documented in a red and black journal. We are extremely proud to have Patrick onboard and look forward to his continued excellence wearing Legion gear.
Cole Zarcone
The former football stud turned rugby danger man from the Pacific Northwest, Cole Zarcone brings power and pace to the San Diego backline. As captain of the Central Washington Rugby Team, he had elevated his team's presence on the field and overall performance. Zarcone, another Rudy Scholz Award finalist, has torn up the college ranks with his size and speed. We are excited to have Cole on our team and see him develop for many years to come.
