MATCH PREVIEW: LEGION ON THE ROAD TO FACE HOUSTON

HOUSTON – After their largest win of the season, the San Diego Legion will look to pick up their fifth straight victory when they head down to Houston for a clash with the SaberCats on Sunday evening.

Since falling to the Toronto Arrows 27-20 on March 10, the Legion (8-2-1) have been on a tear. They battled to a 28-28 draw on the road with the Glendale Raptors, then rattled off four-straight wins against some of the top competition in the league. They laid down a 46-15 beating on the Raptors at home last week, their largest victory of the season, and will face another tough challenge when they square off with a SaberCats (2-8) team that is trending upwards.

The Legion will face a hungry SaberCats team that’s looking to snap a three-match losing streak. Over the course of their last four matches, the SaberCats have shown that they can score points when everything is clicking. The 52-44 heartbreaking loss to the Glendale Raptors at Infinity Park is the perfect example of the explosive offense that the SaberCats possess when they can put things together.

Sunday evening’s match will feature a battle between two of the premier fly-halves in Major League Rugby. Houston’s Sam Windsor led the MLR in scoring in 2018 and finds himself right near the top of the table again in 2019 with 102 points through 10 matches. Windsor leads the MLR with 23 penalty goals. San Diego’s backline is headed by captain Joe Pietersen who ranks fourth in the MLR in penalty goals and conversions with 13 and 28, respectively, and third in points scored with 108.

The battle against the SaberCats also carries serious playoff implications for the Legion as they try to separate themselves from the top of the pack. San Diego currently sits in second place through Week 13. The Legion and the third-place Seattle Seawolves both have 41 points in the table, but San Diego’s league-leading +115 point differential breaks the tie.

San Diego will bring a forward pack that is firing on all cylinders down to Houston on Sunday evening. Paddy Ryan, Psalm Wooching, Week 13 Player of the Week Jasa Veremalua and Jordan Manihera highlight some of the forwards in a pack that has given teams serious problems in recent weeks.

In the backline, the Legion will rely on scrum-half Nate Augspurger, wing Ryan Matyas and full-back Mikey Te’o to secure a victory against a SaberCats backline that has shown flashes of explosiveness at different points throughout the season. Te’o scored two tries in last week’s victory over the Raptors.

Sunday’s match against Houston will be broadcast on The CW San Diego and will be streamed on Facebook Watch for both US and International viewers. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 PM PST.

There will be an Official Watch Party at Cali Comfort BBQ. The party gets started at 3:00 PM with food/drink specials, as well as raffles and giveaways, so come early and join the action!
