San Diego Legion welcomes two new players - Bjorn Basson & Cecil Afrika

Leading up to the start of Major League Rugby next year, the San Diego Legion is thrilled to welcome two new players to its squad. Bjorn Basson and Cecil Afrika will be putting on red and black jerseys come March 20, 2021

Bjorn Basson signs with SD Legion

Starting in 2008 with Emerging Springboks winning the IRB Nations Cup, Bjorn stood out in the competitive South African landscape. After competing against the British and Irish Lions twice in 2009 and breaking the Currie Cup record for most tries in a season, he secured his first Super Rugby contract with the Cheetahs. In 2011, Bjorn was named the Super Rugby joint top try scorer.

Explosive, skillful and an expert finisher, his finesse and pace are perfectly suited for the modern game of rugby. Welcome to San Diego, Bjorn!

Cecil Afrika signs with SD Legion

Cecil Afrika represented the South African Schoolboys in 2006. He was part of the South African under-20 squad in the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship, which reached 3rd in the playoffs. Debuting for South Africa in the 2009 IRB World Series, he became a prominent attacking threat on the circuit. In 2011, he was the top try and point scorer, which led to him winning the IRB International Sevens Player of the Year award.

With his ability to create and finish, Cecil helped the SA Sevens team to Gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. During the 2016 Olympics, his experience and abilities shined through again when his squad won a Bronze medal. We’re excited to see what Cecil brings to the San Diego Legion!
